Antique “KENTUCKY PISTOL” .38 Caliber Self Defense Pistol with GOLCHER LOCK
With Signed Barrel & Maple Stock
Here we present an Antique Kentucky Pistol, made circa the 1840s. This pistol was made in the same way that long rifles were made in that day, and even likely used a segment of an old rifle barrel. The lock is by Joseph Golcher—Golcher locks were prolific amongst gunmakers of the period. The barrel is signed something like “E.W.E”. All of this has been mounted in a maple stock with the kind of grain you would expect in a long rifle. The bore is smooth and measures about .378” for a nominal .38 caliber. A gun of this size would have been good to wear on the belt and its purpose was primarily self defense. In a day in which you had one shot before having to reload—a relatively time-consuming process—it could mean the difference between life and death to simply have another firearm close at hand that was ready to use.
The overall condition is good. The action functions, though the hammer does not reliably stay cocked and can be pushed out of battery. Dim smooth bore. Solid stock/grip contains low wear. “JOSPEH GOCHER” engraved lock. The top of the barrel is hand inscribed and appears to read “E.W.E”.
