SCARCE WINCHESTER MODEL 97 TRAP GUN IN RARE 16 GAUGE, #894XXX, MADE 1936. According to the book WINCHESTER SHOTGUNS AND SHOTSHELLS by Ronald Stadt, after 1926 "Trap Gun" was not always engraved on the breech block. This one does not have the "Trap Gun" marking but does have the straight stock checkered at the wrist and checkered forend of much fancier than standard grade walnut. It is possible that this gun was simply made on special order without being a specific model. Very few special order Model '97s were made and fewer still in 16 ga. as 12 ga. far outsold the 16. During this time of the Great Depression production of 1897 shotguns was about a quarter of what it was in the 1920s. This one is a 16 ga., 2 3/4" with Modified choke and 28" barrel. It is a takedown with matching numbers. The stock and forearm are excellent showing most of the original finish with sharp checkering. The receiver retains the bright blue with only some edge wear and bottom wear.The barrel and magazine retain fine blue. with light wear. Sharp markings, tight action, bright bore, Winchester embossed hard rubber butt plate. A rare and unusual special order '97 from the Great Depressin era in particularly fine condition.
