History of the Model 29
Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 29 in 1955 to meet demand for a powerful handgun that could use the .44 Magnum cartridge.
The Model 29 became famous after being used by Clint Eastwood in the 1971 movie Dirty Harry.
In 1979, the barrel length of the Model 29 was shortened from 6.5 inches to 6 inches.
Modern versions of the Model 29 are made of stainless steel and are called the Model 629.
