Description:
This is a consignment item from a local collector.

"The Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword entered service in 1852 and was in use during the American Civil War, requirements were suspended during WWII. The straight, single edged, fullered, triple etched, 29 7/8-inch-long blade on this one looks great. The frosted acid etched panels provide a great display of: anchors, stars, “USN” marked flags, an eagle, rope and a bannered “USN”. The spine also displays a wonderful laurel leaf and berry motif. It is clear named to a “Alfred C. Edwards” (etched). Alfred Carter Edwards graduated class of 1940 and was from Illinois. The obverse features a five-pointed star and has a separately inserted brass disk/slug that reads “Proved”. The brown leather buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard body is made out of a wood base that has been covered in a blackened tanned leather. It features dual decorative lines running lengthways and is stitched closed to the back. There are three gilded brass fittings which feature; a drag with a triple dotted/lined pattern border and a decorative sea creature to the base, a mid-band which has a knotted rope design, holding a ring, bordered in a dotted/lined pattern and a top-fitting with a knotted rope design holding a ring and a dotted/lined edge. They each have a single side screw. The top fitting is etched: “ACE”. The multi-piece cast brass gilded partial basket hilt features a decorative design of: “dolphin” heads, oak leaf and acorns and a bannered “USN”. The basket and handguard are one piece, the pommel cap and oval pommel top are separate pieces. The pommel top is secured with a single screw and it features an eagle peached on a wrapped-up rope surrounded by stars. The wood-based grip is covered in a white ray skin, that is wrapped in a decorative brass wire wrap. An earlier named example in excellent condition." Source: Original Listing from Lake Side Trader.
