Description: ******* Dog days of summer special - Free Shipping!! ******* Scarce martially marked Whitney Navy Revolver, 2nd Model, 3rd type, of which only 2,000 were made in the 13,000 to 15,000 serial range per Flayderman's. This specimen is serial number 14420. This number matches on the bottom of the barrel and loading lever. On the inside of each grip, on the underside of the trigger guard, and the underside of the frame on the rails are the 14420 serial number plus the sub-inspector initials "JS" for Colonel John Symington. The trigger guard, left flat of barrel at breech and right side of barrel at breech are marked with a "B" sub-inspector mark. The left grip has a worn inspector cartouche that starts with the letter "S" and ends with letter "B" with the middle initial not legible. These revolvers were typically put through the final inspection by either Lt. Samuel P. Baird or Samuel T. Bugbee. Most likely this revolver was issued to a company in the 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry, as both serial numbers 14421 and 14424 were issued to Company K of that regiment per the Springfield Research Survey (the Survey lists a total of only 101 Whitney revolvers that can be directly attributed to a specific company and regiment, compared to hundreds of Remingtons and thousands of Colts). Condition: Basically a dull gray gun with some scattered staining and spotty traces of the original finish. Brass trigger guard somewhat bright with a small ding on the bottom left. Walnut grips are worn and shy of the back strap, possibly lightly cleaned & sanded some time ago, thankfully void of splits or cracks. No cylinder scene remains, but all 6 original nipples are intact and undamaged. Loading lever functions properly and has the correct "wedge style" catch (this variation of the Whitney was the first to use this style, similar to the Colt revolvers). Correct brass front sight intact. Action locks up at both half cock (safe) and full cock (fire). Cylinder indexes spot-on at every chamber and the main spring is still fairly strong. Top of the barrel is marked in two lines "E. WHITNEY / N. HAVEN" and has a scratch on the left flat by the "B" inspector mark. Most of the screw slots show tool use. All in all, this is a very representative specimen of a scarce variation of Civil War revolvers that most collectors would not have in their collection so don't miss out!! No international sales.
