Description:
This Listing from a Family Collection of Shooting Sports Enthusiasts is a Marlin Ballard .22 Caliber Schuetzen Rifle with a Stevens—Pope 28-Inch Half Round/Half Octagon Barrel and Double-Set Triggers; Serial Number 339XX. It easily chambers and extracts a .22 Long Rifle Cartridge. This appears to be an older preservation or restoration piece, given the shiny finish on the finely figured Buttstock and Schnabel-tip Forend. Only the Pistol Grip is Checkered. The left side of the Receiver – which still retains some Case Coloring – is marked in two lines “MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A. / BALLARD’S PATENT NOV. 5. 1861.” – with lettering interrupted by a round/finished through-pin that appears to engage the barrel tenon. The top flat of the barrel has three dovetail bases: the front and rear are held by hex screws; the center one by slotted screws. Between the center and rear bases, it is marked in two lines “STEVENS – POPE / MANUFACTURED BY THE J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.” The bore is difficult to photograph, but the rifling appears sharp. A Vintage Globe Front Sight is present; there is no Rear Sight – however, the top of the receiver ring is drilled and tapped, possibly for a sight base (barrel tenon threads are visible at the bottom). The Schuetzen Two-Prong Buttplate is Polished and Unblued, and a Palm Rest (not available) fitting is present at the Forend Balance Point. The Included Vintage Scope bears no maker’s mark that we can see. The Ocular says “10 POWER”; the front edge of the rear scope ring says “PATENT PENDING” in tiny letters; and the underside of the ocular (behind the index marks) says “200 YDS / OR OVER” on two lines. A modern aluminum sun shade is attached. As shown in the photo, the bottom limb of the crosshair reticle is off-kilter. The center aiming point looks like it is not affected. Condition is best judged from the photos – so please ask any questions or request additional information before as this item will be costly to return owing to CA re-registration and other regulations. Any refunds will be minus our actual shipping cost and FFL fees after buyer pays return shipping. The listed price Includes Insured Ground Shipping from a CA FFL Dealer to yours. Payment is by Money Order, Bank (Certified) Check or Personal Check (held 2-3 days). We are the Estate Executor and Trustee, not a dealer, and cannot handle credit card or electronic payments. This item is subject to prior sale.
