When my now 92 year old father retired in 1997, his company gave him this gun as a retirement gift, not knowing that he had stopped hunting. He didn't like the cold anymore, and when the weather was nice the hunting just interferred with his golf. (He's now backed off on the golf to three days/week :).
This gun would make an excellant all-around field gun... light enough to carry, but chambered for 3" when you need it. Receiver is sort of a luster finish, and barrell is blued.
If you are not familiar with the 11-96, it was introoduced in 1996 as a slightly lighter version of the 11-87 with an upgraded receiver. It was primarily meant for the European market, but it also had some small sales in North America. It did not sell well, and in 2000 was taken out of production, despite the fact that it was chosen in 1997 by Shooting Industry magazine as the Shotgun of the Year.
I think Dad shot the gun a couple of times, and when I got it after they downsized in 2012 I bought a skeet choke and took it to the range once. The metal is 100%, and I rated the wood at 98% because of the little marks near the pad you can see in one of the picture, and a blemish on the base of the pistol grip that I couldn't capture with a photo.
