Description:
S&W COMMERCIAL ‘’974---‘’ SERIAL NUMBER, ORIGINAL PARKERIZED FINISH, 4 INCH BARREL, 38 SPECIAL CAL., LANYARD RING WITH SMOOTH MILITARY WALNUT GRIPS! Now over 82 years old! This rarely found variation is a very early WWII (1941/early 1942) manufacture with all details and all features exactly as the WWII S&W "victory" revolver. As a transition period S&W, instead of having the "V" serial number pre-fix, this variation has the S&W commercial serial number range. Absolutely beautiful in mint 99%+ condition and 100% matching thru-out.

It seems that (?) S&W continued their Commercial Revolver Serial  numbering into the appx. ‘’990---‘’ range before switching over to the WWII ‘’V’’ pre-fix serial numbering. As such it is in a brief ‘’Transition’’ period.

Historical Note: With the very sudden start of USA’s full entry into WWII on Dec. 7, 1941 and the total ending of all commercial firearm manufacture shortly thereafter that this unusual ‘’Transition’’ variation came about and was manufactured for a very short time! As such it is quite a very Historical example of our frantic rush and transition from the Pre-WWII (peacetime) manufacture to full WWII Military firearm manufacture. Even though S&W was already making a slightly but totally different cal. and barrel length variation for the British Common Wealth Military forces, the USA did not have what became the iconic S&W ‘’Victory’’ Revolvers with the "V’’ Serial Number Prefix, *38 Special Cal. and *4-inch barrel length of which over 800,000 were eventually manufactured. Though not extremely rare this example is quite scarce and a rarely found and unusual variation that is quite hard to find. Especially, in near MINT condition and 100% original like this one.
