Description: RARE Documented Springfield 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 Rifle WINCHESTER REFERENCE COLLECTION Offered here for sale is one of the most iconic weapons in U.S. firearms history – the Springfield “Trapdoor” rifle. From the earliest conversions from percussion muskets following the Civil War in 1865 to nearly the end of the 19th century, this rifle was the primary service weapon of the military for almost 4 decades. The first model weapon which was manufactured in .45-70 caliber is this Model 1873 rifle. This specimen, serial number 311191 IS DOCUMENTED AS BEING A PART OF WINCHESTER’S OWN REFERENCE COLLECTION. When Winchester started its demise in the 1960s the majority of the company’s reference collection of Winchesters as well as competitors was moved to Cody, Wyoming. However some “local” dealers were given the opportunity to acquire arms from the collection. This specimen was sold to a dealer and we acquired it along with an individual’s fine collection. The 1873 trapdoor is engraved on top of barrel “WRA” for Winchester repeating arms and the rifle is in UNFIRED CONDITION and was originally sold by Winchester to that collector in 1967. The specimen retains 100% finish on metal with SUPERB case colors. Just a few storage marks. One would be hard pressed to obtain a better Springfield than this and with the association as being a part of the Winchester reference collection this makes it a UNIQUE collectible which would grace the best Winchester collection as well as ANY collection of American arms.
