Description:
The Colt Night Commander of 2024 is a newer version of a fairly rare Colt pistol. A sub-model of the Lightweight Commander Model series, the original Night Commander was produced as a special order for the distributer Lew Horten in 1989. Only 250 pistols were produced for that order. The other two original “Night” pistols, the Night Government and Night Officer, were both issued in 1993 with 300 and 350 pistols issued respectively. The parent design, the original LW Commander itself, was developed in response to complaints from users of the original Colt M1911A1 about the heavy weight of the pistol (when loaded) and the difficulty of carrying that much weight on a regular basis as well as the difficulty of trying to conceal carry a pistol of that size. The Lightweight Commander is otherwise identical to the 1911A1, except it has a shorter 4.25-inch-long barrel and uses an aluminum or alloy frame. The Night Commander (both the original and the new one) utilize the same characteristics to create an excellent conceal carry pistol. It’s worth noting that while the original LW Commander was produced between 1970 and 1983, the original Night Commander wasn’t issued until six years after its parent model was discontinued. The Night Commander of 2024 has the same SKU as its 1989 counterpart: O4840NC, though the “O” would have been printed onto the 1989 box label as a “0” as at that time, the “oh” was indeed the number zero. Today, of course, the “oh” is represented by the letter “O”. While still similar to the zero at first glance, closer inspection reveals that the “O” is broader on the modern labels. The pistol shown here is new-in-the-box and is chambered for the classic .45 ACP. It features genuine Novak Tritium 3-dot night sights for maximum visibility at night, enabling the pistol to earn its name. The alloy frame sports a nice Black Cerakote finish which provides the pistol with both a stylish appearance as well as a superb resistance to corrosion. The frame meshes well with the matte blue finish on the slide. To provide a nice contrast, the safety, slide stop, magazine release button, grip safety, and the mainspring housing have a matte stainless or matte silver finish. The black G10 grips are visibly similar to the blue G10 grips present on the Competition and Gold Cup models. The Night Commander comes with one 8-round magazine.
