Description:
The Models 721 and 722 are considered to be some of the first modern, economically produced sporting rifles, their design largely being continued with the following and highly successful Model 700. Both the 721 and 722 replaced the short-lived Model 720, a development of the Model 1917 rifle, and hence, a development of the Mauser Model 1898 rifle. Manufactured with a high level of precision, both the 721 and the 722 are known for their exceptional accuracy. Remington marketed the two rifles as having the strongest action ever built, a trait they shared with their Mauser forebearer. Unlike the Mauser, however, the 721/722 featured a new encased bolt head. The large claw extractor of the Mauser was deleted in favor of a smaller, but effective part mounted within the recessed bolt face. Examples in excellent condition have become very collectible in recent years. Both the 721 and 722 were introduced in 1948. Production of both ceased when the Model 700 was introduced in 1962. The only real difference between the 721 and 722 was that the 721 used a long-action while the 722 used a short-action. The year of manufacture of almost any Remington rifle can be determined by looking at the barrel code. This usually consists of two letters while some may have three letters. The first letter refers to the month with the code based around the phrase “B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X” where B = January, with each following letter indicating the remaining months of the year. Starting in 1943, Remington began using double letters to indicate the year of production instead of only one. Thus, rifles manufactured in 1943 will have “MM” stamped on the barrel after the 1st letter. This practice was continued until January of 1954 with “AA.” Starting in February of that year, the second letter “A” was dropped. The first letter of this rifle is the letter “E”, indicating it was manufactured in October. The year stamp for the rifle here is “G.” This indicates the rifle was produced in 1960. The rifle is chambered for the famous .243 Winchester, introduced to the 722’s cartridge lineup in 1960. The .243 was originally developed as a versatile short action cartridge to hunt both medium game and small game alike. Upon its initial release back in 1955, the .243 quickly took whitetail hunting by storm, and it remains one of the most popular whitetail deer cartridges, though its popularity has been challenged in recent years by the 6.5 Creedmoor. The .243 is well-known worldwide for its low recoil and superb ballistics, both of which contribute to its multi game capabilities. With the proper bullets, the .243 can be used to take anything from small varmints all the way up to mule deer. It has also been used for tactical applications in the past, having been used by the LAPD’s SWAT unit during its early years. Finding a Model 722 chambered in the .243 cartridge is a rare find indeed, as only 2,186 Model 722 rifles were manufactured in that caliber before the rifle itself was discontinued in 1962, whereupon the Model 700 replaced it (as well as replacing the 721). It is believed that the 722 rifle in .243 has a 1:10 inch twist rate as this was the earliest twist used for the 700 chambered for the .243 as well (Remington switched to a 1:9-inch twist in 1969).
The rifle is in excellent shape for its age (roughly 64 years old). The stock is in excellent physical shape though it is a possibility that it has been refinished There is the usual handling wear such as small nicks or dents in the wood, but no cracks. The barrel and receiver retain most of their original finish. The front sight and its base have been removed. The floorplate exhibits the most finish wear, probably from frequent handling of the rifle. The bore is, of course, in excellent shape if a little dirty. The bolt knob exhibits some micro-pitting which could be fixed with a little bit of Flitz metal polish. The bolt operates very smoothly. The rifle is fitted with a Weaver K10-1 optic which retains the majority of its finish, though there are a few small scratches on the body. The view through the lenses is excellent. This 722 would make an excellent hunting rifle.
