ENGRAVED 16 Gauge Germanic Fowling Piece
Here we present an antique Gold Inlaid and Engraved Christoph Funk Side by Side Double Barrel 16 Gauge Hammer Shotgun, made circa the 1880s in Suhl, Germany. One of the seldom mentioned gunmakers in Suhl is Christoph Funk. His business was known to be just as innovative in model development as the big name German makers, though his historical facts are lacking, to say the least. He founded his company in 1835, and over the years, has had several different proprietors, all named Funk. Funk was also very well known for his high quality drillings that he produced.
These German shotguns are known for their quality of workmanship. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. This is a very Germanic fowling piece that is elegant with its intricate engravings as well as its simplicity and practicality.
The overall condition is very good. Original Damascus pattern on the barrels, blue finish and gold trim. The actions are excellent. The right bore is smooth and bright while the left bore has subtle rifling and remains in good condition. The stock shows use. There is a repair on the right side of the forearm. Otherwise solid throughout.
