200+ Year Old WAR of 1812 Era Close Range Weapon
Here we present an antique British E. Baker Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa the early 1800s in London, England. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range.
The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for Naval boarding or defending vessels, stagecoach and messenger companies, home defense and more. It was capable of firing up to 20 buckshot in front of 120 grains of black powder, according to Spencer Tucker in “Almanac of American Military History, Volume 1”. This particular example is highly likely to have been used in the War of 1812 on the side that didn’t win!
The overall condition is good. Refinished. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock is solid throughout.
