The Remington 1917 rifle, also known as the M1917 Enfield, was a bolt-action rifle used by the United States during World War I. It was based on the British P14 rifle design and was produced by several manufacturers, including Remington Arms. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it became the most widely issued rifle to U.S. forces during WWI, surpassing even the Springfield M1903 in numbers.
Key Features:
  • Caliber: .30-06 Springfield
  • Action: Bolt-action
  • Magazine: 5-round internal magazine
  • Sights: Adjustable rear aperture, blade front sight
  • Weight: 9 pounds (approximate)
  • Barrel length: 26 inches
Conflicts Served:
  • World War I: The Remington 1917 saw extensive use by American troops during WWI. It was the primary rifle for U.S. forces because production of the M1903 Springfield couldn't meet demand.
  • World War II: Though largely replaced by the M1 Garand, the M1917 was still used by secondary troops, home guards, and for training purposes.
  • Korean War: Some M1917 rifles were used during the early phases of the Korean War by various forces, particularly for training.
  • Other conflicts: The rifle saw use in various other conflicts in smaller numbers, including by allied and reserve forces in nations that received U.S. surplus equipment.
The Remington 1917 is often regarded as a durable and accurate rifle, praised for its robust construction and the effective use of the .30-06 cartridge. Today, it remains a popular collector's item.
