This is (or originally was) a Marlin Ballard Model 1-¾ Far West Hunter’s Rifle in 45-70 Caliber. It looks refinished with an Untapered (approximately) 30-Inch x 1-1/8" across the flats Full Octagon Barrel. The Barrel appears new/replacement. The left side of the receiver is marked in two lines “MARLIN FIREARMS CO, NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A. / BALLARD’S. PATENT NOV. 5. 1861”. Barrel is Marked “45/70 GOV’T.” on the left flat ahead of the receiver. Serial Number 251XX is on the bottom of the action in front of the lever hinge. The Buttplate is Blued Steel Crescent (Rifle) Pattern. As best we can tell, the Double-Set Triggers and Long Trigger Guard make this an unusual and nearly impossible to find Model 1-¾ Far West Hunter’s Rifle. The Barrel carries one 3/8 Dovetail Base; Two crossways dovetail cuts (filled with blank inserts); a set-screw at the muzzle; and the Receiver is Drilled & Tapped with Plug Screws in place. There's a wood plug in the forend tip that fills what could have been a ramrod or cleaning rod hole. This fully operational shooter has an excellent nearly new bore. The lever has approximately 3/8” of free play, which is better & tighter than most original Ballards; and that does not affect operation or safety.
