The rifle version were mostly equipped with a raised cheek piece while this one the Carbine version had only the Monte Carlo comb but no the raised cheek peice. What Marlin's logic for these 2 variations is anyone's guess. The rifle was intended to compete with Winchester's Deluxe Model 94 (and sold for more than the Winchrseter 94 Deluxe. The Carbine was nearly identical with the same real hand checkred American Walnut butt stock and forend but absent the raised cheek piece. Both were a vast improvment from the earlier versons prior to the Bishop designed Stock (they were formerly very plain.) The earlier version were lst maed in approx 1949, only near the end of production were these attractive improvements incorporated. Of the millions of Marlin levers made only approx 5000 (rifles) were produced and likely fewer of the Deluxe Carbine version. The deluxe rifle were sometimes called the Deer Rifle while the Carbine was the Deluxe Sporting Carbine (produced from approx 1957 to 1962. You will not see many of these anywhere. It has carry wear but the condition refects careful wear over the 65 or more ys since it was made in the old Marlin Factory about 45 mins from our door now sadly long since closed. In addtion to the distict checkering these were characterized by the oversized rear sling swivel stud. The identifying Marlin Bullsey is missing but these are or were avail from Brownells or Numrich or elsewhere. The wood as it aged shrings slighltly causing the plastic bit to fall out . Made in 30 30 , 32 and 35 Rem, this one is chambered in 30 30. Any questions about the accuracy of this info pls refer to the Col Brophy book p 257.. This is a 1958 model, 2d yr production.. SOLD |
