Description:
An Early & Historic G.A.R. Richardson Post Gavel Made & Taken From Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's Flagship, "St. LAWRENCE" Which Was Disabled By British Fire During The Battle Of Lake Erie On September 10, 1813 In Its Original Untouched Condition. All original as found. The burl wood gavel has nice ring carving throughout it. The original nickel plated plaque on the front reads, "RICHARDSON POST 254/G.A.R./TAKEN FROM PERRYS FLAGSHIP/ST. LAWRENCE". The gavel has had a lot of use as shown in the photos. It measures 11 1/2 inches in length and the gavel itself is 4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.
During The September 10, 1813 Battle of Lake Erie "The St. Lawrence: served as the Flagship for Commodore Oliver Hazzard Perry until she was disabled by British Fire. Perry then transferred to her sister ship, "NIAGARA" from which he fought the battle to a successful conclusion. The British never took physical possession of the "Surrendered St. Lawrence" and so Perry automatically regained the ship at the end of the battle with no recapturing action needed. Perry received the enemy squadron's surrender on the "Deck of the Lawrence".
