This Listing from a Family Collection of Shooting Sports Enthusiasts is a highly desirable Pre-War, Used; Circa 1941; SN 652,5XX; King’s Gun Sight Company of San Francisco full target treatment on a Colt Official Police Heavy Barrel .38 Special Revolver. It has all of King’s signature features: COLT-KING SUPER TARGET designation on the Raised, Ventilated, Serrated Matte Rib – which extends across the backstrap to the Windage and Elevation-Adjustable Rear Target Sight. The Rib creates a Level Sighting Plane over the Heavy Tapered Factory Barrel marked “OFFICIAL POLICE / 38 / *HEAVY BARREL*” in three staggered lines on its left side. The Elevation-Adjustable Front Sight has King’s Trademark Light-Reflecting Mirror inset into the rib. A more recent Red Insert is added. Also present is King’s Patented Asymmetrical, Fine-Checkered Hammer, Offset to the Left. The Trigger has an unmarked serrated shoe. Grips appear to be Herrett’s Select Matching Grain Walnut Target Grips in their Thumbrest + Hand-Web + Below-Finger style – with this set having all of the Backstrap covered; and the lowest portion of the Frontstrap exposed in peek-a-boo manner. Grip Panels have the checkering stained darker than the surrounding walnut. The King Rib covers the Patent Dates. This fine custom target revolver shows honest wear for age to the blued finish – which is best appreciated in the photos. Not being dealers or experts, we estimate this revolver as better than 70 Percent Modern Condition with excellent bore, rifling and chambers, and a faint cylinder line.
