There are no military markings on this cannon so it most likely was sold to a merchant ship. Larger B.P. & Co Blomefield cannons can also be seen in Canadian border forts and as far as South Africa to China.

The company was established in the late 18th century on the northern bank of the river Thames at Gun Wharf Wapping, London and moved to Brierley Hill in 1820. Items produced at London and Brierley Hill comprised shot, shell and cannons for the British Army, as well as for commercial ships, trading posts and other armed forces around the world. The cannons produced by Bailey Pegg were of ‘Blomefield’ design developed in the late 18th century by Board of Ordnance Inspector of Artillery, Major General Sir Thomas Blomefield (1774-1822). By 1792 most English gun founders, including Bailey Pegg, were using Blomefield’s new design. The caliber of cannons produced at Brierley Hill included 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 16, 18, 24 and 32 pounders; the caliber of a cannon quoted in terms of the weight of the cannonball that it fired. A number of Bailey Pegg cannons have survived the ravages of time and can be seen on display at various locations throughout the UK and beyond. One cannon of local interest is the 6 pounder with 4-wheeled carriage which is positioned beneath the WW1 war memorial located on Church Hill as you approach Brierley Hill High Street from Brettell Lane. Another cannon of particular interest is a 6 pounder with 2-wheeled carriage that was used by the British Army during the siege of Mafeking in South Africa. The siege was successfully commanded by Major-general Baden-powell (185-71941) during the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902). SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Bailey Pegg & Co. |
