Description:
Macabre SKULL POMMEL JOHN DAY PATENT Underhammer PISTOL CUDGEL .41 Antique

c1820s Maker of Early Percussion Cane Guns

Here we present an antique John Day Patent Underhammer Percussion Pistol-Cudgel Combination with a Skull Pommel, made circa the 19th Century in England. John Day patented his underhammer cane gun in 1823 and many such guns were made using his ideas. Of course, canes could always be used for a weapon in a pinch but cane guns took that to another level. A gun in disguise has multiple applications, not the least of which would be self-defense or perhaps an assassin’s tool. That is how many conceive these pieces today, but many cane guns were marketed as highly practical tools for farmers to use as they were poking around the brush and tall grasses looking for pests or small game. This piece’s form is less of a cane and more of a cudgel or scepter. As interesting as it appears it still does not easily betray the fact that it is a gun. This piece utilizes Day’s Patent for the underhammer mechanism. The barrel threads off for loading at the breech end, allowing loading without the use of a ramrod as well as allowing a slightly larger ball for a better gas seal in the bore.

The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and dim. The barrel threads on and off as intended. A fascinating and intriguing piece!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-3/4 inches.
