Description:
EXCEPTIONAL CIVIL WAR FIRST MODEL HENRY REPEATING RIFLE W/ 4TH WEST VIRGINIA INFANTRY SOLDIER NAME INSCRIPTION. All original and matching early Henry Rifle serial number 740 inscribed on the frame in faint old script on BOTH SIDES  “JOHN H. WAHLBARGER 1864”  who enlisted in the Union 4th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry in 1864 serving to the end of the war. Wahlbarger (spelled Wheelbarger in later census records) was from Rockingham County Virginia and a Unionist enlisting in the newly formed West Virginia 4th Regiment when at the age of 20. He lived after the war and his widow later collected a Union pension after his death. Excellent overall with beautiful unpolished frame and approximately 60-70% blue very nicely mixed with old dark patina. Stock with all the original finish. Rarely encountered Henry .44 caliber centerfire to which it was converted from rimfire in the late 1860’s or early 1870’s with gas port added at the time. Perfect working order and excellent bore. Very handsome historic Henry at a reasonable price.
