Payment Types Accepted: Cash, Check, USPS Money Order Description: This gun is a Manton double-barrel, 14-gauge (12-gauge in the title is incorrect), percussion shotgun, with Birmingham Proof Marks (see attached proof marks photo). It is all original, including its percussion-cap nipples and its ramrod. The barrels are 30 inches in length. Both sides of the lock are engraved with a floral pattern and a rope-looking border all the way around. At the top of each lock plate, about an inch from the front end of the lock is engraved “MANTON”. The tang and the trigger guard, which extends back six inches under the stock, are also engraved with a floral pattern bordered by the same rope-looking engraving as on the lock plates. About 3/8 inch behind the tang is a plain (no engraving) brass shield escutcheon; though chipped it has its original finish which appears to be lacquer. The top of the barrel, about 2 ½ inches from the rear is engraved with ”FINE LAMINATED TWIST”. Those words are bordered on each end with a floral pattern. The barrel-retaining pin and its escutcheons are engraved with a flower-like pattern and the same rope-looking pattern on the side lock plates. The stock has wrap-around checkering design that starts under the trigger guard and extends back about 9 inches. Both hammers are engraved with floral patterns. The butt plate is plain, but extends four inches on top of the stock; it is engraved with a floral pattern. The date of manufacturing of this gun is estimated to be 1840 to 1850. Overall, the shotgun is in excellent condition - 98 percent. All metal parts are in excellent condition with a beautiful reddish-brown patina. There is one very small dent om top of the left barrel about eight inches behind the muzzle (see photo). There is also one 5/8-inch scratch on the side of the barrel about an in inch back from the end of the forend. As mentioned above, a small amount of lacquer finish on the brass shield escutcheon (maybe 10 percent) is chipped off the brass shield that sits on top of the stock and just behind the tang. All the metal parts attached to the stock and forend are embedded in the wood. The wood stock and forend is in excellent condition with a few dents on the bottom of the forend and on the stock. The wrap-around checkering is deep and crisp, with no damage, mars, or stains. The most significant – on the right side of the stock, some kind of cleaning agent was splashed onto the wood creating light-colored splash marks (visible in the photos). These marks are not visible from the left side of the stock. The photos are high resolution, so zoom in to see details.
