Description:
1918 COLT PRE-WOODSMAN .22 LR RF Semi-Automatic TARGET Pistol C&R w/HOLSTER

TARGET MODEL First Series of WOODSMAN PISTOLS

Here we present a C&R Colt Pre-Woodsman Semi-Automatic Target Pistol made in 1918 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Target Model was the base model and featured a 6" barrel with adjustable front and rear sights. It was not until 1927 that the name "Woodsman" was used.

The original Colt .22 Target Model, as is this one, was designed by John Moses Browning prior to production beginning in 1915. There were three series of Woodsman pistols with the first series being referred to as those built on the frame used prior to and during World War II. The second series were those built on the second frame during a span between 1947 and 1955. The third series was the third frame design that began in 1955 until production ended in 1977.
Each series had a Target Model, a Sport Model, and a Match Target Model. All models were very similar in most aspects. For example, the Sport Model is basically a Target Model with a shorter barrel and maybe different sights, and the Match Target Models again were nearly the same but with a beefier barrel.
In the post war years, Colt produced three very similar economy models. They were the Challenger, Huntsman, and the Targetsman. The actions on these economy models were the exact same internally to the higher end models of the same period, lacking only in some of the “refinements”. Because these guns were not assembled in a strict numerical sequence, there is no exact serial number dividing line. Thus, serial number overlaps numbering in the thousands are common.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with decent rifling. Grips are old replacements that remain solid. The leather holster and this gun look like they have been together for their whole service life and remains in good condition.
