Description:
RARE SPECIAL ORDER 1873 .44-40 WITH EXTRA LONG 28" ROUND BARREL AND FULL MAGAZNE, #163XXX, SHIPPED 1884. According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, only 1201 rifles were made wth longer than the standard 24" barrel. In my experience most of these long barrel '73s were in .32-20 caliber with .38-40 next and few in .44-40. The factory letter from the Cody museum verifies the barrel length etc. and shows it was shipped from the warehouse on Oct 20, 1884. The receiver sides show fine bright blue with some plum and gray mixing, original dust cover, exc. screws, still some light traces of case color on the lever and hammer, the barrel shows good blue on the bottom portion above the mag tube with the balance mostly gray/brown with some scattered spotting/splotches of very light surface corrosion. Mag tube shows mostly aged bue mixing heavily and uncleaned gray/brown Fine markings, tight wood to metal fit with generally excellent stock and forend, tight action with strong safety half cock, original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Winchester small blade front sight. Uncleaned .44 CAL marked brass lifter. Bore shows strong rifling with scattered surface corrosion. In all an extremely rare early 1873 .44-40 caliber special order rifle that still retains some good finish. (NOTE: what looks like light/dark areas on the receiver is just light reflection off oil)
