For your consideration is rarely seen configuration of what is a somewhat common gun as far as Sharps sporting rifles go - a Sharps Model 1865 conversion rifle chambered for the infamous .50 2 1/2 Sharps cartridge, aka the "Big 50". When reviewing the surviving references of the the E. C. Meacham catalogs, it can be seen advertised that their "1874" sporting rifles were available in variants of the .40 and .45 caliber sharps cartridges - a .50 caliber cartridge was not advertised. It can be assumed that this rifle was special ordered by a retailer for a customer.
The rifle itself is in good condition; generally better than the average conversion gun that comes to market. The rifle, SN C45956, weighs in at around 10 lbs - whoever ordered this was certainly not afraid of recoil. The 30 inch octagon barrel retains very good rifling, with only some scattered frosting/pitting visible. The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable", " SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN.", and "50 CALIBRE 2 1/2". The bottom of the barrel is marked "11234" - it is fairly common to see unmatched serial numbers with these conversion rifles made towards the end of the 1870s and early 1880s, and especially so when it comes to a cartridge that strayed from the common 45-70 or 40-70. The action and double set trigger function flawlessly, and the firing pin is intact. The wood is in excellent condition, with only some scattered bumps that can be expected from a rifle that is 140+ years old. Overall, this is an amazing piece of history that would be suited at a target range just as well as a buffalo hunt.
