Description:
Shipped May 16, 1892 to famous shooter Marcellus Chick as an A-2 grade 12 gauge with 30" brls. By serial number this is the very first and earliest recorded A-2 grade L.C. Smith made and known to knowledgeable collectors. Brl Set 1 built with 28" damascus brls that have matted concave top rib and small brass front bead. Brls hand engraved at breech end on rib "THE HUNTER ARMS CO. MAKERS, FULTON, N.Y.". Brl flats are polished and bottom rib stamped "A2". Forend lug stamped "1". Splinter forend for this brl set is finely point pattern and diamond checkered with graduated ebony tip and has fully engraved early style slide release, escutcheon, and iron. Interior of iron stamped "1" and has SN stamped. This brl set appears to have been shortened during its early period of use from 30". Brl Set 2 (we believe this may be the original set delivered with the gun) similar to Set 1 though engraved "FINE DAMASCUS" on right and "MADE BY THE HUNTER ARMS CO." on left. Brl flats with SN. Bottom rib stamped "A2". Splinter forearm with triangular ebony tip and is near full coverage checkered with engraved slide release and iron. Interior of forend iron stamped "2" and with SN on this set. Full sidelock receiver is very finely scroll engraved in near full coverage on locks around game scenes in oval which show 2 Pointers in relief on left, 2 Setters on right. Sidelocks are double stepped at rear and have very fine floral engraving behind steps. Front portion of locks engraved "L.C. SMITH". Brl bolsters are scroll engraved and beautifully double beaded. Top of frame with scroll engraving which extends on to top lever and top tang engraved "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of the panel safety slide. Bottom of frame is nicely sculpted and scroll engraved. Trigger guard with burst of scroll on bow and tang with SN at center. Gun made with double triggers, auto ejectors, 3 position safety. Factory straight grip walnut buttstock is checkered in fleur-de-lis & wave pattern through the wrist and terminates with a very hard leather faced waffle pad. Gun is housed in a modern full leather 2 brl set case with green canvas cover. Gun is accompanied by a L.C. Smith Collectors Association Letter identifying mostly as found today without mention of the 2nd brl set.

Overall the gun remains in excellent and collector quality condition. Both brl sets retain about 90% of their older restored damascus pattern. Forends are excellent and retain most of their factory finish. Frame has some traces of original color remaining but has toned with engraving remaining crisp. Buttstock is excellent and retains most of its factory finish with great wood to metal fit. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are excellent. Marcellus Chick is readily found as a competitive shooter throughout the 1890s and its is rare of an L.C. Smith to be identified to a specific shooter. This is a great and historically significant L.C. Smith worthy of any advanced collection.

This rare Smith is the best early A-2 offered publicly in many years. It is priced at $19,950 plus shipping. Please dont hesitate to contact me with any questions or reasonable offers at (704) 280-2382 or via PM on this site.
