Description:
Model 1873 “Trapdoor” Rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory. This rifle features the early high arch breech block marked MODEL 1873 above an eagle with crossed arrows an U.S. The right side of the lock plate is stamped SPRINGFIELD. It appears that the previous stamp with the eagle and patent dates has worn away. The receiver is also missing all signs of a serial number. The 3-groove barrel measures 26.5” indicating that it may have been cut down at the breech block end. It is assumed to bechambered for the standard 45-70 cartridge of the time. The receiver measures at about 2.75”. The comb of the stock measures 9.5” The hammer is square in shape. No inspector marks are visible. The barrel bands are marked with a “U” on the right side. The butt plate is marked US with the number 215. The sight appears to be a period non-standard replacement added to the barrel when it was shortened. The hammer is missing its retention screw. It is possible the stock was refinished a long time ago, removing the cartouches. Same with the lock and barrel. This appears to have been a rifle that was used and sent back to the armory to be reworked for service.
