Hard to find very nice antique Newhouse #6 grizzly bear trap with ROME on the base. This was the largest bear trap produced at the time, approximately 1865 - early 1870's, and likely has caught many bears over the past 150+ years. This trap is all original with stamped trip hammered forged springs, riveted teeth, and chain. Most of these traps are passed on to family or to other collectors. Springs are stamped, S. Newhouse Oneida Community N.Y. On a very limited number of bear traps a raised letter ROME can be found, which was marked at the steel mill in Rome, N.Y. The ROME mark on a trap because of it's scarcity can usually increase the value by 10-15% or more. These nice old bear traps don't come up for sale very often; truly a piece of Americana history from days gone by.
