Description:
This is an 18th century British merchant marine taffrail mounted flintlock blunderbuss ships swivel gun. This same [attern was used by the British navy. But this example lacks the traditiona British military markings. So it must have been a private purchase for a merchant vessel. The lock shows heavy pitting on the flint cock, pan & fizzen. But the action is crisp with very strong springs. Lock plate has the traditional boarder lines. Center is marked LONDON and has the arrow mark. The tail is marked with a very small crown over S M. I've never seen such a mark. The back side of the plate has a very small crown over 38.The barrel has 2 proof marks and the number 12 on lrft side at breech. Stock is in good condition with a chunk of wood missing from the barrel channel on the left side fore-end. Barrel is pin held. The piercing in the stock for the swivel is at the exact balance point. Butt plate is held by 3 screws. All 3 original screws are present. But one of the holes is stripped and a replacement screw is in place. I stuck a couple peices of stick matchs in the hole so the screw would tighten down. The original screw has threads still, but the slot head is useless, so I had no way to drive it in.
Overall length is 42". Barrel measures 26" long. Bore size is dificult to measure. Best guess is about 80 caliber. Muzzle measires 2 5/8" extirior, 2 1/8" interior. Barrel weighs 14 Lbs. 11 oz.
