This pistol is a an excellent example of what can be achieved when taking an older design for a rifle and re-engineering it for shorter pistol-caliber cartridges. Although not the first pistol-caliber AR15 pistol, CMMG’s Banshee is one of the best available on today’s market. This example is the previous Banshee Model 300 (Mk G), as opposed to the more recent ZEROED series. The Banshee uses a patented Radial Delayed Blowback™ operating system rather than the more common straight blowback system of most PCCs (Pistol Caliber Carbine, although this one is a pistol rather than a carbine). The radial delayed blowback system was created to address some of the operational concerns that come with conventional blowback designs. In the traditional blowback the weight of the bolt and recoil spring keep the action closed. Thus, heavier and more powerful cartridges require more weight to operate safely and reliably. In the radial delayed blowback system, the carrier design integrates a bolt that must rotate before the bolt will cycle, allowing the gas pressure in the chamber to drop to safe levels before cycling. Keep in mind that all of this happens within fractions of a second. The amount of force required for the bolt to rotate removes the need for a heavy buffer, bolt, or recoil spring. Therefore, the Banshee’s action system is lighter than in other blowback firearms of the same caliber. Another feature that separates the Banshee from other PCCs is that the upper receiver features feed ramps, meaning that the pistol will reliably feed cartridges utilizing any type of bullet, even flat nose rounds and hollow points. This has been an issue for many AR PCCs over the years. In terms of ergonomics, the Banshee 300 sports a set of operating controls designed to be user friendly all times. It has a CMMG-brand charging handle that is both ambidextrous and extended, making it easy to operate in a tight situation. The magazine release lever is not ambidextrous, but it is definitely oversized to allow for an easy mag drop even in the cold winter time with gloved hands. At first glance, the safety might look like an ordinary AR safety, but it is actually an ambidextrous type. The bolt release is the standard Mil-Spec type, but this can be replaced by a wide-paddle type if necessary.
This Banshee 300 Mk G features a Sniper Grey Cerakote finish for the upper, lower, and hand guard. The pistol is equipped with a 7.5-inch barrel and a short, 7.0-inch-long hand guard. The grip is a Magpul MOE polymer grip. The brace appears to be an SBA3. It is chambered for the legendary .45 ACP cartridge; well known for its stopping power, the .45 ACP was originally created by John Browning for the famous Model 1911 pistol. The .45 ACP is also well known for its suitability with suppressors. Standard factory loads usually propel the 220 to 230gr bullets at subsonic speeds, meaning there is less wear and tear on the suppressor than with other pistol rounds. With a good red dot sight, this pistol would make an excellent home defense firearm. One of the nice things about AR’s is their ability to be customized. Anything can be changed with respect to the parts, whether it be the handguard, the sights, pistol grip, or the trigger. Speaking of the trigger, the standard trigger on the Banshee 300 is crisp (little to no take-up) with a short reset, so it may be better to leave the trigger as is unless the user prefers a flat-faced type. The pistol is equipped with a set of Magpul flip-up sights. The Banshee exhibits only a small amount of wear, with most of the finish wear being present on the upper receiver’s picatinny rail, the shell deflector, and the front edges of the handguard. There is also some wear on top of the lower receiver’s buffer tube ring, just below the charging handle. This should not be confused with the buffer tube lock ring or the end plate. There is no muzzle thread protector, but the Banshee does come with the original box, a factory-issue Glock 13-round magazine, and a Kriss Vector MAG-EX G30 30-round magazine.
