The pre-war Heym Deluxe Grade 4A 20-gauge side-by-side game gun, serial number 26194, is a true masterpiece of German craftsmanship, produced in Suhl, Germany, in May 1932. This exceptional firearm is a rare find, blending functional elegance with artistic excellence, making it a highly desirable collector’s item and an heirloom-quality sporting gun.
This Grade 4A model features a sideplated boxlock action with cocking indicators, double triggers, ejectors, and an automatic safety. The solid build incorporates double underbites, a doll's head third fastener, and sideclips, ensuring a secure lock-up and reliable operation. The 28-inch barrels are constructed from Krupp fluid steel, marked "FR. WILH HEYM" on the right, "GRADE 4 - KRUPP FLUID STEEL BARRELS" on the rib, and "SUHL GERMANY" on the left. The gun is choked Improved Cylinder (.008” restriction) in the right barrel and Modified (.018” restriction) in the left barrel, making it versatile for upland bird hunting or clay shooting. Weighing a mere 5 pounds, 11.6 ounces, the gun is perfectly balanced for all-day carry in the field.
The engraving on this Heym is nothing short of stunning, featuring meticulously hand-engraved game scenes on the sideplates. The left plate depicts a German Shorthaired Pointer intently pointing at three partridge, while the right plate shows a Labrador Retriever flushing five ducks. Deep relief carved bolsters, along with foliate scrollwork and vine patterns, adorn the remainder of the action and barrels, showcasing the artistry of Suhl’s master engravers.
The beautifully figured European walnut stock and forend are equally breathtaking, boasting a rich grain pattern and an impeccable hand-oil finish. The sharp multipoint checkering on the pistol grip and splinter forend enhances grip while adding to the gun's elegance. Further accents include an engraved, steel pistol grip cap and a dainty ebony Schnabel tip on the forend. The stock features a leather-covered recoil pad and measures 14 1/8 inches in length of pull, with a drop at comb (DAC) and drop at heel (DAH) of 2½ inches each, ensuring comfortable handling and a natural point of aim.
This firearm is in excellent overall condition, with bores that are mirror-bright and sharp rifling. The triggers are crisp, the action locks up tightly, and the ejectors operate flawlessly. The original color case hardening on the action is well preserved, highlighting the care this gun has received over its lifetime.
Finding a Heym Deluxe Grade 4A in this remarkable condition is exceptionally rare, especially one of pre-war provenance. This gun is not only an exquisite tool for the field but also an investment-grade collectible. It stands as a testament to the golden age of German gunmaking and the enduring appeal of finely crafted sporting arms. Truly a gentleman’s gun, it is ready for both display and field use—a beauty to behold and a legacy to cherish.
