This is a rare Engraved Colt that was a Cavalry sidearm.
Back when our government was not as wasteful. They would sell back the arms that weren't needed.
There was not a lot of these.
Then Colt would embellish these guns to some degree. Very few were engraved. But most had different stocks attached. Ivory, pearl or maybe a checkered wood. Anyway.
To make a long story longer. These are rare. I believe you can call this factory engraved.
probably engraved by one of the master engravers students. Very well done.
letter states it was shipped to US Government as Cavalry. After it's return to Colt and reconfiguration there might be some record of where it went to next. I need to get in contact with Colt. But they haven't been as willing to accommodate collectors as they once were. We'll see.
