Payment Types Accepted: Check, Money Order Description: This is a RARE Warner Carbine--Greene variant, made for James Warner for his 2nd Civil War contract (first was the Warner Springfield Carbine), with serial no. 1927. Total made was 2500, delivered in Feb.-March, 1865. Warners were known issued to the 3rd Mass. and 1st Wisconsin Cavary Regiments. By 1870, almost 2500 of them (both types possibly) were sold as surplus to Schuyler, Wartley and Graham, the largest firearm dealer in the U.S. as of 1860, which immediately resoold them to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. This is a single-shot, hinged breechblock, rimfire with 20" round barrel fastened by a single iron band. It was chambered for the 56-50 Spencer cartridge, with manual extraction with the slide at the rear underside of the forestock. Saddle bar and ring are on the left side of frame. Distinctive gun in that the frame, breech, trigger guard, and buttplate were finished bright brass. Wood is walnut. CONDITION: Barrel has brown patina and no pitting. The frame maintained a nice mustard patina, with dents that are usually found on brass frame guns. The marking are Good+: "Greene Rifle Works/Worcester, Mass. Pat. Feb. 1864". Wood is VG overall with some scrapes and dings showing field use. It has French acceptance markings with 38-bore gauge mark on the barrel, indicating .50 caliber. ADDED: Bore photos--bore has light to moderate pitting with strong rifling throughout. Overall condition (all original parts), including bore, is Very Good. These guns were not liked by cavalry troops. They were hard and slow to manage in action. The mechanics are Very Good, likely as good as they can possibly be for this gun and its design. A RARE and nice example of the Warner Greene. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .56-50 Spencer |
