Description: SOLD...Antique 1876 Winchester. Here is a decent early 3rd model entry grade ole 76 at a reasonable price. It has the standard 28” round barrel. It is in the best shooting caliber 45-60. S/N is 26207 and was made in 1882.. The bore is shootable with the normal black powder roughness but no big craters and no rings or bulges. It feeds, fires and ejects with no issues or hang ups. It still shoots straight with .459 sized cast lead bullets with no keyholes and is still pretty accurate. The gun over all is a medium brown to gray patina with traces of blue on the barrel above the forearm channel where protected. The mag tube retainer and the end plug look like reproductions as they just look to clean.. The mag tube is original I believe as it has a couple small patches of light pitting on both sides that have been cleaned up and a couple very shallow dings.. Maybe some touch up color. The side plates might be from a second model as the right side has the loading gate screw entering from the outside like the second models but I am not sure when the cut off date was on these parts.. It is a 3rd model frame as the dust cover rail is integral and not held on with the screws. The side plates are original Winchester as I have removed them for internal inspection, cleaning and lube. Either way this is a set of second model side plates worth $400 or more if you can find them!!! The internal toggles are still pretty tight and the lever and carrier springs are good as are all the pins are still in place snug and just do not fall out when you take it apart like most of these do. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. It still has the original long rang or “ladder” rear sight marked 1876... The front sight has the tiny set screw on the right side so it might be from a later 73 or 92 ? But it is an original Winchester standard front sight. Has the original dust cover that has some pitting but still retracts properly with the lever throw and is still fairly tight. The screws all look very good and not burred up with tool marks.. The wood is good with no splits or cracks. The forearm fits tight and is even or proud to the receiver and forearm cap. Minor honest dings and scratches. Does not look like it has ever been sanded on or messed with. The butt stock fits tight and is even with the upper tang.. Proud at the bottom tang because of being protected by the lever as is common. A little shy at the receiver on both sides and the butt plate. Over all this is not a bad 1876 and will make a fun shooter.. Best of all, it is priced very reasonable. These are getting harder to find even in this condition that I can sell for less than $3000. $60 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. SOLD Antique: Yes |
