Description:
LD NIMSCHKE Signed ENGRAVED Antique SMITH & WESSON Number 1-1/2 .32 ANTIQUE

GOLD, SILVER, IVORY INSCRIBED “Floyd Reynolds”

Here we present an antique Nimschke Engraved Smith & Wesson Model Number 1-1/2 .32 Rimfire 2nd Issue Revolver, made circa 1868-1875 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The name “Floyd Reynolds” is inscribed on the backstrap.

This revolver is signed “L.D.N.” by the famous engraver Nimschke, on the underside of the barrel. Louis Daniel Nimschke was one of the nineteenth century’s most talented and prolific firearms engravers. His professional career spanned from around 1850 to around 1900. Nimschke’s firearms engraving style generally employed the use of neat, broadly-formed foliate scrollwork with rounded terminals accented with curved or straight hashmarks, against a punch-dot background on more expensive commissions, often surrounding blank panels and ribbands. Sometimes his designs incorporate animal figures, portrait heads, and sophisticated panel scenes, and only occasionally signed his work. This is a rare opportunity to own one of his signed works!

The overall condition is very good. The engravings are characterized by scrolls on the frame and barrel, foliate patterns on the cylinder and just ahead of the cylinder on the barrel, as well as a shield on the top of the grip frame. The inscription is just below the shield on the back. There is some of the original gold finish on the ejector rod under the barrel, in the cylinder flutes, and a bit on the hammer. There is likewise some silver, which was used to help the gold adhere better to the steel. Solid ivory grips. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. A fantastic and rare piece!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
