According to the serial number, 38431, this ‘66 was built in 1870. it is in rough original shape, as all of the them are that actually saw use back then. Look at how smooth the bottom forward edges of the frame are and imagine how much time this rifle spent being carried in the old West. Either in the hand or in a saddle scabbard. It is missing two set screws for the brass fore end cap. The Winchester stamps on the top of the barrel flat are clear and still deep, as is the serial number. There is no caliber marking, but based on production date, it’s certainly chambered for the original .44 Henry cartridge. Buttstock and fore end are tight, no shift or rattle. Old mustard patina from the butt plate to the fore end cap. Sights look right and original to me, with the silver front blade and rear flip. Action functions as it should, was very stiff when first handed to me, likely hadn't been handled much in the last half century, it responded well to a little oil. The barrel actually has a very strong bore, strong rifling with touches of corrosion here and there. I just ran some oil patches down it, it may clean to much better, but that's up to the buyer. Wonderful, early example that could really respond to a little TLC. This is an as-is sale, but you can trust me to have provided you with the most accurate description I can.
