From an Enthusiast’s Collection: Used; Circa 1950; Serial # K96,8XX with matching Serial Number on the Rear Cylinder Face; 5-Screw Smith & Wesson K-38 Masterpiece Professionally Rebarreled with a Rare Colt .38 Special Python 8-Inch Full Underlug Target Barrel. The left side of the Pinned Barrel is marked in two lines: “PYTHON TARGET / *38 SPECIAL CTG*” and the right side: “COLT’S PT. F.A. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” on one line. It has S&W Click-Adjustable Target Sights; Serrated-Rib Top-Strap section; separate Serrated-Rib on the Barrel; and a Pinned, Low-Ramp Front Sight; Target Hammer, Fixed (frame-mounted) Trigger Stop and ACE Trigger Shoe. The gun appears reblued with all numbers, markings and insignia remaining sharply defined and fully preserved. Cylinder lockup is tight and secure with Colt Style rear-lockup, only. Both Front- and Backstrap are Serrated; Thumbrest Target Wood Grips cover the Bottom of the Frame and Frontstrap, leave the Backstrap exposed, and have panel checkering; they look like Sile-brand to us; we cannot be certain. A faint partial cylinder line is present with minimal bluing wear at the front cylinder edge and frame lockup/ recoil plate areas. Small streaks of bluing loss are present at the front of the frame below the barrel pin and just above the Four-Line S&W Address, both on the right side. Chambers show mild wear ahead of the case mouths; the barrel is bright with sharp rifling. Irregularities in the photos are shadow artifacts that move around depending on the angle of view. Allowing for custom gunsmithing, reblue and barrel replacement, and not being dealers or experts, we estimate this revolver at approximately 90-95 Percent Modern (Refinished and Reblued, Not Original) Condition.
