Description: Guns Listing ID: 462428 Winchester Model 1892 Carbine 44-40 Win 20\" Octagon Barrel, \"WRACO\" Serial This is a rare 1892 with a \"WRACO\" serial number stamped over where the original serial number would have been. General consensus is that the rifles with \"WRACO\" serials were sent back to Winchester to be refinished and the original serial were obliterated. Winchester would stamp the \"WRACO\" over the original serial number so that dealers could not sell the firearms as new. This practice occurred between 1900-1903. Another possibility is that these \"WRACO\" serialized rifles were purchase by the Sears & Roebuck company as a way to avoid Winchester‚‚s suggested retail pricing. Winchester refused to sell rifles to Sears or any dealer that sold Winchester rifles to Sears, so dealers would obliterate the serial number to avoid being caught. It is believed this practice was done until approximately 1911.
