Description:
Antique W. KETLAND English FUSIL Large Bore .72 Caliber FLINTLOCK Musket

Early 1800s BRITISH FLINTLOCK

Here we present what appears to be an antique W. Ketland English Style Flintlock Fusil, made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in London, England. Though partially obfuscated, the lock reads “W. K****”, likely being made by Ketland. W. Ketland was Thomas Ketland Senior’s eldest son. Thomas Ketland Senior was a highly successful Birmingham gun maker. He started his business around 1760 and expanded into the export market around 1790. He died in 1816. W. Ketland was originally a partner alongside his father and William Walker. He petitioned to liquidate his part in the company in 1800. The partnership was dissolved in 1801. He died in 1804 but the business carried on to at least 1831.

This smaller, lightweight musket is commonly referred to as a fusil. Fusils such as these were made by gunmakers at large rather than by the national armory and would have been used by officers, fusiliers, volunteer regiments, and even militia units.

This fusil follows the Brown Bess in form with its barrel secured by pins rather than bands. The barrel is 41" in length, a bit shorter than the regular 2nd pattern Brown Bess of 42". These muskets were exported to the U.S. for militia service as well as for use as ships muskets, etc.

The overall condition is good. Bright metal surfaces. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock shows some repairs around the lock front and back and along the forearm. Otherwise solid.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41 inches.

Caliber: .72 Flintlock
