This piece was owned by U.S. Army Officer Arthur Rutledge Underwood (A.R.), a graduate of the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1909, along with young George S. Patton. The factory letter confirms the revolver was shipped on September 23, 1909 to Lt. A.R. Underwood who was on his way to the Philippines to combat the insurrection. Underwood served through World War I with the American Expeditionary Force and ended his career as a colonel and commanding officer of Fort Thomas, Kentucky in 1944. The colonel’s initials are carved into the bottom of one grip panel. The hammer is jeweled and the cylinder converted to .45 ACP so the more common ammunition and moon clips could be utilized. This revolver comes in its original leather holster that is beautifully preserved along with medals from the Philippine-American War, the Great War, World War II, and a good conduct medal, as well as uniform buttons. There is also a copy of a photograph, census records, his son’s obituary which mentioned the senior Underwood, and some overall information about the colonel’s career. The overall condition is fine. Original finish including fire blue on the hammer. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The Colt trademarked grips are in fine shape with initials in the bottom of one panel as mentioned above. The numbers match. A classic Colt revolver in .45 with provenance!
