Description:
This is a nice example of a WWII Springfield Armory M1 Garand that became one of numerous M1s to be classified as "unsafe to shoot." In an attempt by the US Navy to convert some Garands from the .30-06 cartridge to 7.62mm NATO, an adapter sleeve was inserted into the barrel's chamber to compensate for the difference in the lengths of the two cartridges. These "sleeved chambered" rifles were then designated by the Navy as "Mk 2 Mod 0." It was discovered, however, that the chamber sleeve would on occasion be extracted from the chamber with the brass. The Navy then decided to stop inserting sleeves into chambers, and instead use actual barrels specifically made for the 7.62mm NATO cartridge, and redesignated these rifles as Mk 2 Mod 1. Consequently it was declared that all existing Mk 2 Mod 0 "sleeved" rifles were not safe to shoot.

With this in mind, this particular rifle has a Mk 2 Mod. 0 "sleeved" barrel, as well as a WELDED RECEIVER, thus making this rifle further UNSAFE TO SHOOT. This rifle is for sale strictly as a DISPLAY or PARADE ITEM ONLY and has had the firing pin removed from the bolt. This rifle does, however, come with a period-correct Utica Cutlery bayonet with a 10 inch blade and correct scabbard.
