The "MAS MLE 49-56" is a French semi-automatic rifle, officially called the "Fusil Mitrailleur modèle 1949/56", which was the standard infantry rifle for the French military from 1956 until the late 1970s when it was replaced by the FAMAS; it is essentially an improved version of the earlier MAS 49 rifle, incorporating lessons learned from combat in Indochina and Algeria, featuring a shorter barrel, lighter weight, and a more modern grenade launcher capability with NATO-standard 22mm grenades; considered a reliable and versatile weapon with a distinctive design and wooden stock.
