This example is London proofed and has a three stage slightly swamped barrel with the lock marked “I. BRAZIER”. John Brazier was apprenticed to his father William in 1734. He became Master of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1750 and again in 1755. He passed away in 1769. William Brazier was apprenticed to Edmund Weston in 1702. He was Contractor to Ordnance beginning in 1714. He was elected Master of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1730 and again in 1747. As a Contractor to Ordnance, he is recorded to have had 28,844 guns proved at the London Proof House between 1721 and 1731. This information about this gunmaker was obtained from “Gunmakers of London 1350-1850” by Howard L. Blackmore. This example has a massive .62 caliber bore, which would be a great deterrent to a “ne’er do well” looking at the barrel pointing at his chest. This type of flintlock is what would be carried in the busy streets of Paris or London in the belt or coat pocket of a gentleman during the tumultuous times of the mid-1700’s in Western Europe. This old flintlock has weathered the test of time, considering it is pushing 300 years in age. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. Original flintlock. The bore is smooth and dark. The stock shows use along with thin splits here and there; overall solid. The ramrod is a replacement to complete the look. Remnant of London proof on the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-5/8 inches. Caliber: .62 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
