in 1979 the NYSP asked S&W for a fixed sight, N frame .357 Magnum, and the 520 was born. The department got tired of waiting and went with the Model 28 instead. S&W sold the 3,000 revolvers to the public in 1980, and most were grabbed up by collectors. I bought this one new in 1980. It has had about 200 rounds fired through it.
