Description:
According to the book "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitters. Asa Waters (the elder) operated a gun shop in Sutton, Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War. The overall design and parts were based on the typical officers holster pistols that were in fashion in England at that time.

As with other known examples of his work - some of the parts were most likely imported from England and finished, fitted, and assembled/stocked at his gun shop since there are no European proof marks, and even in those days it was cheaper to import parts than it was to produce them.

Approx.  .62 smoothbore barrel at 7 inches in length with overall length at 13 inches. Top left side of the barrel near the breach in serrated arcs is "PRO" / "VED" . a known proof mark of the Asa Waters gun shop. Finely-engraved locks inscribed "Waters" in centers. Locks feature sliding half-cock tang safeties. Brass furniture, including side plates, chased with military arms and flags. Pommels have grotesque mask caps. Trigger guard finials terminate in acorns. Silver wrist escutcheons have chased clamshells at tops and both are engraved with two crowns over a single crown. (the coat of Arms for Sweden) ..American Walnut stocks with fine relief shells carved around barrel tangs. Original Horn ramrods with horn tips, one having a silver screw bullet puller. Barrels cleaned and show some scattered brown staining, markings very good. Locks grey and in their original flintlock configurations, functioning properly throughout. Brass retains a mellowing patina and guns show fairly heavy wear from handling but not heavy use. Stocks shows scattered repaired age cracks, marks from use and one forend tip of 2-1/2" professionally restored..

Asa Waters was born in Sutton, Mass. He and his brother Andrus bought a factory in Singletary Creek in 1776. After two years in business, Andrus died. Asa continued the company and became known as a musket maker for the Council of Safety. He also served as a Lieutenant in the Lexington Alarm, an auxiliary militia group. In 1782, he moved the factory to Millbury, Mass. and named the company Asa Waters & Co. His company was succeeded by his two sons Asa H. and Elijah in 1814.
This particular pistol was produced by Asa Waters before his move to Millbury, Mass. It was most likely contracted for use during the Revolutionary War. The design of the pistol is copied from English pistols.
