Here we present an antique Manuel Orbea Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa 1853 in Eibar, Spain. Manuel, Mateo, and Casimir Orbea are recorded as gunmakers in Eibar from circa 1840 until 1929 when they ceased arms production and started manufacturing bicycles. This was a large pistol made for hooking on one’s belt in a martial setting such as the military or even as a ship’s pistol in case of pirates.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. At some point in time the bore was cleaned, and has a bit of shimmer for its age. Solid stock with nice grip checkering. Markings are legible. This example has light floral engravings. “EN EIBAR/POR MANUEL ORBEA/ANO 1853” is silver inlaid atop the barrel.
