Description:
Fine Leman-Lancaster Pennsylvania Percussion Full Stock Target Rifle
Offered for sale and just acquired is this classic 19th century percussion target rifle made by Henry Leman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  The octagonal barreled rifled "Kentucky" style rifle, is more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It is marked on the percussion lock plate with maker mark LEMAN / LANCTR.PA, amidst some simple floral engravings. The heavy rifled .40 caliber octagonal barrel is 38.5" long and the rifle measures 54.5" in overall length.  The stock is full stocked, something we do not see often with this type of rifle, and it is all brass mounted.
HENRY E LEMAN worked in Lancaster from 1812 until 1887, but we feel this rifle started life as a percussion weapon, and not a conversion from flintlock. The rifle has a "set trigger" (thus depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just lightly touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy). The stock is very nice, with no cracks that we can see, and has a good amount of lovely "tiger stripe" figuring, the embellishment which collectors term “curley maple”. There is a nice cheek piece carved into the left butt stock.  The action is sound and the rifling is sharp. The area around the lock is “bleached” from use. It can be darkened but we have left “as is”.  It retains an appropriate wooden ramrod which most likely a replacement.
There is some surface patina on the buttplate which will certainly clean and we will do so before shipping.
A most attractive attractive Pennsylvania Long Rifle, ready to display!
