Double Barrel SHOTGUN Early 1890s Fowling Gun by HENRI PIEPER Here we present an antique Wells Fargo Marked Union Machine Company Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made by Henri Pieper circa the early 1890s in Liege, Belgium. After the 1890 Tariffs were passed into law in the United States, any shotgun costing more than $5 was charged exorbitant import duties. So, to maintain their businesses, makers produced cheap shotguns for export to the United States. Consequently, cheap double barrels flooded the markets with mail order, hardware, and sporting goods stores in the late 1800s to early 1900s. This example has the trigger guard stamped "W.F. & Co. EX./TUSON" in questionable fashion. Wells Fargo will forever be remembered as a stagecoach thundering across the American West, loaded with gold. The history of this company spans for over 160 years and is rich in events that have happened throughout the history of the United States. From the Gold Rush, through the Great Depression, and continuing today, Wells Fargo has travelled through the history of America as one of its greatest companies. The overall condition is good.
