Description:
Winchester Model 1886 in 40-82 WINCHESTER, Made before 1899, ANTIQUE, 26" Octagon Barrel. I bought this rifle back in the 1980s when I was in love with the large frame lever actions shooting powerful cartridges like the 40-82. The 40-82 was the 300 Magnum of its day. The rifle appears to be in the original configuration and has appropriate wear for a rifle that is over 125 years old. Someone before me has lightly sanded the stock and gave it a coat of varnish which has since worn in and looks very nice. The action is good and functions correctly. The rear sight is marked "1876" which would be somewhat rare, but very similar to the 1886 sight. Years ago I found some 40-82 ammo and I shot 20 rounds through it with great results, no misfires or malfunctions. The bore is in fair condition, although worn, and it hits where it is aimed. The rifle has no serial number. Either it never had one or the lower tang, which is a seperate piece, has been replaced. The Marking on the upper tang, which says simply -MODEL1886-, was discontinued at or before serial number 115,000 according to George Madis in The Winchester Book. I have since verified this with other Winchester experts. Serial number 115,000 was made in 1898. Therefore, this one is an antique and qualifies as such. This would make a good shooter, dies are available, or it could be restored, or even rebarreled to a more easy to find round. It is an amazing experience to shoot these old rifles, and think about where they have been. Please check out the pictures and thank you for looking.
