Description:
( Sold - Nick R. ) This is a very sharp little Winchester Model 1894, made in 1909 according to the Winchester Collectors reference.  It has a 20" half octagon barrel and full magazine.  The bore of this .30 WCF is excellent, bright, sharp, very shiny - I rate it a 9.5.  The rear sight is a rare full buckhorn variation. The rifle retains a high percentage of blueing, with some carry wear, scratches and dings on the receiver with more finish on the barrel and magazine.  The lever still has some case colors, the hammer colors are faint, mostly fading to a silvery finish.  The wood has a very light refinish, with most areas still flush to the metal or better, the profile wasn't changed, the corners at the wrist are nice and square - no missing chips, cracks, etc. just some scattered  light marks and impressions.    This rifle has the standard 9 3/8" fore stock - Madis states in The Winchester Book that both lengths will be found on rifles with shorter barrels - but the 8 3/8" predominates.   I believe that when Winchester built short rifles most were built with the shorter fore end and the rear sight set farther back.  This rifle could have been ordered later and made from a standard rifle, possibly returned for the alteration, or even owned  by a Winchester employee and shortened for personal preference ?  I removed the front sight to show the milling in the dovetail, the muzzle crown is excellent - it definitely looks like factory work, and this rifle has been like this for a long long time.  The Cody museum records won't show the factory records for a rifle built in this range.   Mechanically this rifle is excellent, the action is crisp and positive, strong hammer spring -it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and it is an accurate shooter.  Overall  this is a great looking, unique  little rifle, with alot of finish remaining.
